According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2022 rankings, Tsinghua University has retained its position as the best university in China, followed by Peking University and Zhejiang University at number two and three respectively.
Beijing, Hubei and Shanghai each have 2 universities in the top ten, while Anhui, Jiangsu, Shaanxi and Zhejiang, each have one university in the top ten.
So, what are the top 100 universities in China?
Note: Universities with the same ranking are listed alphabetically.
About ARWU
The world universities ranking by the Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU) is published by the Graduate School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and is updated on an annual basis.
It uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university.
More than 1800 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 1000 are published.
